it clearly is harmful. the mistaken email (which, I have decreed, would ha=
ve=20
been avoided had the user not top-posted) spent approximately 25MB of the=20
list server's bandwidth (assuming there are about 5k subscribers to the lis=
t)

It was a small email as well. If you'd like, I can point you to some rathe=
r=20
large emails from deep in threads where the entire conversation is top=20
posted, with no trimming. Oh, and the people had those damned silly=20
disclaimers attached as well, which were about 15 lines each.

Also, my email client places my cursor at the start of the email as well, b=
ut=20
you don't see me top posting. Saying "it's because your cursor goes to the=
=20
top of the email when you click reply" is a cop-out. That's like saying=20
you're not at fault for getting in a car accident because the gas pedal is=
=20
RIGHT UNDER YOUR FOOT.

I am a firm believer in that all of the world's (and the internet's) proble=
ms=20
can be solved by education. Sure, I could let you shoot yourself in the=20
foot, but that bullet might ricochet and hit me, so it's in my best interes=
ts=20
to pull the gun out of your hand.
